Children and Divorce

Separation and/or Divorce are extremely stressful times for both parents and children alike. Children will experience a wide range of emotions and feelings as a result of their parents’ separation, as separation invariably uproots their routines and structure.  It is how parents choose to deal with the changed routines, living arrangements and possibly conflict that determines how well children will adapt.

First things first. Take the Parenting After Separation (PAS) Course. You can read a blog post we wrote about the PAS course here.

See the interesting article titled Children’s Reactions to Parental Separation and Divorce authored by Catherine M Lee, PhD and Karen A Bax, BA.

The Centre for Public Legal Education has a website with information and suggestions for parents, children and teens on what to expect during separation and how to deal with the changes brought about as a result.

If you feel your child is suffering and not adjusting to the separation of divorce you may want to speak with your child’s physician who may be able to recommend strategies to help your child cope with the changes going on around him/her. You might also consider seeking professional help from a therapist specializing in helping children. Speak to your doctor, family friends or clergy for recommendations. If you need help finding suitable counselling for your child, give us a call and we will try to point you in the right direction.
